HTML Frameset (HTML 5 not support)

The HTML <frameset> tag is used to define a frameset in HTML 4.01 and below, and is not supported in HTML5. The possible child element of <frameset> element are <frame>, and <noframes>.elements. Both  <frame> and <noframes> tags are therefore not supported in HTML 5. Besides the <object> element in the <head> element used by the entire <frameset> element is also not supported in HTML 5.

Elements of Frameset

The elements of frameset are <frameset>, <frame>, and <noframes> tag elements.

  • A <frameset> element is a container for containing another <frameset>, <frame>, and optional <noframes> elements.
  • A <frame> element is a container used to specify another HTML document to be displayed in a particular area of the viewport of the UA.
  • The optional  <noframes> element is a container used as alternate element container for supporting browsers which are not able or disabled to support <frame> element.

Construction of Frameset

A <frameset> element is used to divide the whole retangular display area of a window viewport into sub-rectangular display areas. In other words, the dimension of the whole HTML document output is limited and fixed by the window viewport. Each area is also called a frame and is used to display another HTML document specified by a <frame> element. Since a <body> element is used to specified the body of  a HTML document, the <body> element is replaced by the outermost <frameset> element to specify a set of HTML document.

The order of <frameset> and <frame> elements nested in a <frameset> element is always arranged starting with the top-left <frameset> or <frame> element of the window viewport and ended with the bottom-right <frameset> or <frame> element of the window viewport      through from left-to-right and top-to-down

The layout of a frameset can be done by 'rows' and 'cols' attributes, and nested <frameset> elements.

'Rows' and 'Cols' Attributes

The 'rows' and 'cols' attributes are used to specify simple regular HTML document layout. A 'rows' attribute is used to specify the number of horizontal sub-rectangular display areas in the parent <frameset> element in terms of frame counted vertically. A 'cols' attribute is used to specify the number of  vertical sub-rectangular display areas in the parent <frameset> element in terms of frame counted horizontally. If the 'rows' attribute is not set, all frames in the parent <frameset> element will flow through the entire length or height of the parent <frameset> element. If the 'cols' attribute is not set, all frames in the parent <frameset> element will flow through the entire width of the parent <frameset> element. In other words, the default value for 'rows' and 'cols' attributes are equal to 100% of the window viewport of the parent <frameset> element. Therefore when both 'rows' and 'cols' attributes are not set in the <frameset> element, there is only one <frame> element nested in the <frameset> element. For example,
