Adding RamDisk to Hyper-V Virtual Machine

Reference:

  1.  Windows 8.1 x64
  2.  Gavotte Ramdisk 1.0.4096.5
  3. ASUS ROG RAMDisk Win7-8-8-1_V20206

There are many software utilities to add a ramdisk to the Hyper-V virtual machine. Some typical examples are Gavotte ramdisk, ROG ramdisk, Buffalo ramdisk, and OSFMount Empty Ram Drive

Gavotte Ramdisk

Since the Gavotte ramdisk driver has not been sent to Microsoft for signing, the Gavotte ramdisk driver can not pass through the driver signing enforcement. The Gavotte ramdisk driver can be installed using the "Add legacy hardware" option in the "Device Manager" after the driver signature enforcement is disabled.

The "addswap.exe" utility still can be used to add pagefile to a fixmedia type physical disk or ramdisk. However, the maximium size for each pagefile is limited to 2047M.

Adding pagefile to a ramdisk is usually not necessary for Windows x64 pro because the physical memory limits of Windows OSs pro x64 are usually greater or equal to 128G.

ASUS ROG RAMDisk

The ASUS ROG RAMDisk utility software can only be used on a ASUS ROG motherboard. All files and folders in the ramdisk are automatically saved to a image backup file on the hard drive when turning off the PC, and go back to RAM when powering on the PC again. An additional junction function of ASUS ROG RAMDisk are provided as a simple setup for mapping a folder on a physical drive onto a virtual ramdisk.

The dynamic memory allocation property also makes it suitable for using as a scatch disk and file caches.

AMD Radeon™ RAMDisk

The free version of AMD Radeon RAMDisk utility software can be used to create one ramdisk with maximum RADMDisk size up to 4GB/6GB. The location of backup image can be changed. Although the background update of save option is not available for free version, a "Save Disk Image Now" option is provided for immediately image backup.

Typical application is to set up the ramdisk for Windows Readyboost or browse profiles.

Buffalo Ramdisk

The Buffalo Ramdisk utility software is a utility of Buffalo Storage e.g. DriveStation or MiniStation for creating one ramdisk. The location of backup image can be not changed. Sometimes the computer may needed to be restarted before some settings will take effect.

Typical applications are to set up the ramdisk for Windows Readyboost or browse profiles.

OSFMount Empty Ram Drive

The OSFMount is a utility software for mounting local disk image files in Windows. Besides OSFMount also supports the creation of RAM disks such that a disk can also be mounted in RAM to improve the disk accessing speed.

The flexible mounting property makes it suitable for mounting ramdisk for temp files.
